What Is IEM?
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) is a professional body or learned society with the objective of promoting and advancing all aspects of engineering for engineers. It was established in 1959. It was admitted a member of the Commonwealth Engineers Council in 1962. The Institution is a qualifying body for professional engineers in Malaysia. The Corporate member of the Institution can apply to the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (which is a registration body) for registration as a Professional Engineer, which will entitle him to set up practice. The qualification standards are determined by the Council of the Institution.
The Institution is one of the few professional engineering institutions in the world, which represents all disciplines of the profession, and is thus able to take a broad view of the professional scene.
How to apply to become an IEM member?
Anyone can apply to join IEM provided he/she has the necessary recognised engineering qualification. A list of recognised qualifications is available at the IEM Headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan. As the list is updated from time to time, it is not available for sale or distribution.

What is the benefit of being an IEM member?
There are a lot of benefit for being an IEM member. IEM Member gets the opportunity to enhance the technical knowledge and skills as an engineer. This is important for their development as professionals; and essential for the progress and promotion of the profession as a whole. IEM Member can also participate more actively in the Institution by giving time and energy to organising the above-mentioned activities, and play a role in issues of concern to engineers by giving opinions and be proactive in effecting positive changes for the good of the engineering profession in the country.
As members, one would be informed regularly of the events and upcoming activities of the IEM through the monthly bulletin, the Jurutera, for which one pay only a nominal subscription fee annually. There is also the IEM e-community that a Member can be part of.
Members also enjoy cheaper rates should there be any charge for the activities organised by the IEM.
How long does the application process take?
The application process can take from one month to one year depending on the grades applied and completeness of documents submitted. Application for student Membership can take as fast as one month while application for Corporate Membership can take as long as one year if the candidate fails in the Professional Interview. However, the Institution will strive to speed up all applications as the strength of the Secretariat has been increased.
