Training and coaching carry different meanings despite having the same goals which is concerned with the development and improvement of individuals in the workplace. Both training and coaching have their place in every organization especially in developing cities like Ipoh, Perak and Kuala Lumpur. Essentially, training is used for orientation for new workers, changes in processes and procedures, and new government regulations. In contrast, coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the current issues rather than on the distant past or future. In other words, training is about transferring knowledge while coaching is about enhancing knowledge.

Training refers to a variety of different issues such as how to execute a new task which the employee has no experience or knowledge of doing, or how to implement certain concepts which employees would have a vague understanding of. In results of undergoing the training, employees will have a deep understanding on the job duties assigned to them. Apart from that, training is also needed when the current employees are promoted to a higher position or relocated to another department. Training is also required to the employees when new technologies or systems are introduced to further strengthen the system within the company especially for company in big cities like Ipoh, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur.

John Whitmore stated that “Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them”. Traditionally, coaching has been linked with athletics. Every top athlete has a coach or mentor. Currently, coaching has become applicable in every area, business, and every aspect of life especially in big cities like Ipoh, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur. In the world of work, coaching is suitable for employees who already have the skills and knowledge, but facing challenges or obstacles that preventing them from giving full commitment in attaining their optimum potential in the workplace for the company especially in developing cities like Ipoh, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur.

In a nutshell, training and coaching are two different things, however both training and coaching are used together to improve the skills of employee in a company in big cities like Ipoh, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur, so that they can contribute more towards the success of the company. Employees undergo training in order to teach them skills, and coaching sessions getting them to utilize these skills to maximum potential.
